The establishment of the Barrett House Sustainability Demonstration project provides residents of the Eastern suburbs the opportunity to see practical sustainability measures at work. These include:

  • energy and water efficiency measures
  • a permaculture garden
  • waste avoidance, minimisation and recovery ideas.

The Retrofit

Renowned sustainable living designer, Michael Mobbs, has advised on the design of the Barrett House retrofit.

Whether you rent or own, live in a unit, apartment or a detached house there is something for everyone.

The History of Barrett House

Barrett House was the home of pioneer filmmaker Franklyn Barrett, who wrote, edited and produced silent films in his home at 22 Frenchmans Road (now 6 Barrett Place). As a result, Barrett House is listed as a heritage item under Randwick’s Local Environmental Plan 1998.

His daughter Harrie Sylvia Barrett generously bequeathed Barrett House to Randwick Council on the proviso that it be maintained as a community resource, including a permanent dedication to the work of filmmaker Franklyn Barrett to the Australian film industry.
