Jonathan and Greg attended the Climate Change & the NSW Election – Strategy Meeting tonight at Greenpeace’s head office, 33 Mountain St Ultimo, on Wednesday night, October 6.
This planning meeting was organised by the Community Climate Network, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and Greenpeace to build a shared understanding of the political landscape and opportunities for climate campaigning in NSW up to the State election in March 2011, to identify possible areas for cross-movement collaboration on demands, to map out a campaign timeline and brainstorm ideas for possible joint movement tactics/events through ongoing collaboration until March 2011.
‘Twas an interesting meeting. About 20 people attended live with another eight on the phone from all over NSW. The meeting was chaired Pepe Clarke, from NCC. We discussed State specific climate action issues. Three main areas stood out, i) 100% renewable energy, ii) no new coal fired power stations and iii) energy efficiency measures. A time line was drawn up and it was clear that we really need to start campaigning now. Collating info on each area and putting a cogent argument together to present to candidates and constituents is essential. More as the official minutes of the meeting is released.
