CASES to Leaflet Local ANZ Bank Branches to Ask Them To Stop Funding Coal

CASES’ members will be leafletting local ANZ branches next week to discuss with them the fact that ANZ is Australia’s leading financiers of coal based investments to the tune of $1.6 billion dollars into coal mines, coal ports and coal power stations over the past five years.

More recently, on September 30, two weeks after it won the Dow Jones Sustainability Index award for the being the world’s most sustainable bank, ANZ lent $150 million for the refurbishment of one of the most polluting coal plants in Australia and then slapped a confidentiality clause on it’s finance deal so that it’s name could not be revealed for fear of reputational damage.

We will be asking ANZ to stop funding coal fired power stations and invest in 100% renewable energy instead. We will be using the resources provided by Greenpeace in the Dirty Banks campaign. We shall report on our efforts in due course.
